The inquest revealed that the preserved remains of a convicted sex offender were discovered in a trailer six months after he went missing during a police pursuit following the demise of his partner. Richard Scatchard, aged 71, disappeared subsequent to the death of Kelly Faiers, 61, at his residence in Minehead, Somerset, in October 2023.
A recent inquiry into Ms. Faiers’ passing disclosed that Scatchard coerced her into ingesting a lethal combination of sleeping pills and alcohol. The inquest established that the mother of four from Weston-super-Mare was unlawfully killed.
Scatchard, who had been found guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting women from 1986 to 2000, was under life license. The last confirmed sighting of him was in the Watchet region of Somerset, approximately 10 miles from Minehead, the day after Ms. Faiers’ body was discovered.
Despite efforts by Avon and Somerset Police to locate Scatchard, no evidence of his existence post-October 2023 was found. His body was detected at a camping site in Watchet when the caravan was extracted from winter storage six months later.
The investigation disclosed that Scatchard, described as physically fit for his age with no known medical issues, was identified through fingerprints. Detective Constable Mark Evison highlighted that Scatchard was wearing a wristwatch set to British Summer Time, indicating his last known time setting was before October 29, 2023.
Detective Sergeant Craig Thomson mentioned that Scatchard had no known ties to the campsite, and the circumstances of his arrival there remained unclear. There was no indication of third-party involvement in his demise or any signs of self-inflicted harm.
During the post-mortem examination, Pathologist Dr. Deborah Cook noted substantial decomposition of Scatchard’s body with no apparent natural cause of death. Although toxicology samples indicated the presence of alcohol and a common compound found in medications, accurate assessments were hindered due to the advanced decomposition.
Given the lack of conclusive evidence, Senior Coroner Samantha Marsh recorded an open conclusion on Scatchard’s demise, citing uncertainty regarding the cause and timing of his death. The date of discovery was deemed as the date of death due to the circumstances surrounding the case.
