In a case near Buckingham Palace, a man described as a “predator” has been sentenced to seven years and three months in prison for attempting to rape a woman. The incident occurred in the early hours of September 7, 2024, when Ramzi Barkat, aged 54, followed the victim out of St James’s Park in central London. Despite the victim rejecting his advances, Barkat proceeded to physically assault her by pinning her down. Fortunately, the assault was thwarted by three courageous young soldiers who heard the woman’s cries for help.

During the sentencing at Southwark Crown Court, Judge Justin Cole condemned Barkat’s actions, stating that he had targeted a vulnerable woman and behaved like a predator. However, Judge Cole also criticized the police for their handling of the case, citing a series of errors that led to Barkat being released either on bail or under investigation after the incident.

The judge expressed disbelief at the authorities’ decision to release Barkat despite clear evidence of his dangerous behavior, allowing him a year of freedom to potentially harm others. Barkat, originally from Algeria and residing in north London, was found guilty of attempted rape and assaulting one of the soldiers who intervened. Despite his denial of the charges, Barkat was issued a 10-year sexual harm prevention order and a 10-year restraining order.

In recognition of their bravery, Judge Cole announced that he would be nominating the young soldiers for High Sheriff Bravery Awards.
