Wildfires are currently raging in 19 locations across England and Wales as the UK experiences high temperatures, leading to the issuance of additional heat-health warnings for most of the country.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow alerts for seven English regions from Tuesday to Friday this week, as per forecasts from the Met Office predicting temperature peaks of up to 33C in south-central areas.

According to the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), emergency services are actively responding to 19 wildfire incidents, including large moorland and agricultural fires. The NFCC highlights that significant wildfire risks persist in various parts of England and Wales, with some areas facing extreme danger levels.

Major incidents have been declared for wildfires in North Wales and Glossop, Derbyshire in the Peak District.

Met Office representative Stephen Dixon mentioned that the ongoing heatwave is expected to continue in much of the UK, with temperatures potentially reaching 33 degrees Celsius in certain parts of southern-central England. The spokesperson indicated that southern-central regions could experience temperatures in the low 30s throughout the week, with even the possibility of mid to high 20s in other areas.

However, temperatures are anticipated to cool down by the latter part of the week, with peak temperatures likely to be in the mid-to-high 20s by Saturday.

Phil Garrigan, chairman of the National Fire Chiefs Council, emphasized the challenges faced by fire and rescue services in combating significant wildfires across the UK due to rapidly spreading fires in dry conditions. He urged caution while outdoors, advising against using disposable barbecues in open spaces, disposing of cigarettes properly, and taking litter home to prevent wildfires that can cause extensive damage to the environment and communities.
