On his 100th birthday, Aston Nehemiah, one of the few remaining survivors of the historic journey to England aboard the Windrush ship, is being celebrated. He embarked on the voyage on 27th May 1948, bearing the passenger number 881, and disembarked in Tilbury on 22nd June 1948.

Paul Chambers, the chair of the British West India Regiments Trust, praised Aston, describing him as a remarkable individual who embodies the resilience and courage of the Windrush Generation. As a veteran of the RAF during World War II, Aston’s life has been marked by service, determination, and integrity, making significant contributions to Britain’s wartime efforts and post-war recovery.

Having left Kingston on the Windrush as passenger number 881, Aston, despite warnings from Jamaican authorities about job scarcity in England, arrived in the UK without a job to go to. This was not his first time in Britain, as he had previously served in the RAF during World War II.

Returning to Jamaica after the war, Aston will celebrate his centenary at the Curphey Home for Military Veterans. The Windrush ship has become a symbol of the mass migration movement that invited Caribbean individuals to assist in rebuilding post-war Britain.

The historic journey of the Windrush carried over 1,000 individuals, with the majority hailing from the Caribbean islands. These passengers, including Aston, were part of what is now known as the ‘Windrush generation,’ a pivotal group in shaping the cultural landscape of Britain.
