Advanced weather models indicate that the ongoing heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 30C for most of the month, is likely to conclude with a significant drop in temperatures. Meteorologists from the Met Office project that southern UK areas will continue to experience temperatures of 30C or higher until at least Friday, while northern regions are expected to see temperatures peak at 28C or more during the same period.
However, forecasts suggest a cooling trend over the weekend. The ECMWF weather model anticipates morning temperatures dropping as low as 6C in parts of Scotland on Sunday. Northern England may wake up to temperatures as low as 7C, with the warmest morning temperatures expected in the south-west at 15C-16C.
By midday on Sunday, the ECMWF model predicts peak temperatures of just 17C in southern England, a marked contrast to recent scorching conditions. Wales is forecasted to reach 15C, with 13C expected in the Midlands and Northern Ireland. Temperature anomaly maps for Sunday show that most of the UK, excluding the south-west, will experience temperatures below the seasonal average.
The ECMWF model indicates that certain counties, totaling 27, could see temperatures below 10C on Sunday morning, all located in Scotland or northern England. As per the Met Office, temperatures are expected to gradually decrease from Saturday onwards as the strongest breezes shift towards northern regions. Starting from Sunday, conditions are predicted to be “somewhat less hot” compared to recent days.
The Met Office’s forecast for July 19 to July 28 mentions that most parts of the UK are likely to remain dry, as high pressure persists near the country. Despite the air originating from the North Atlantic, temperatures are forecasted to be relatively cooler than recent days. Any showers at the beginning of the period are expected to be more prevalent in the far north.
