University Employee Charged Over Violent Remarks

Published on

A university employee has been formally charged by law enforcement following allegations of expressing a desire for Ann Widdecombe to suffer a severe demise. Heather Herbert, aged 50, stands accused of making the contentious remarks on social media, where she reportedly indicated satisfaction at the reported passing of the former Cabinet Minister and wished for her to experience excruciating pain while being restrained.

The controversial posts were said to have appeared on Bluesky last week, coinciding with reports suggesting Ms. Widdecombe’s demise at her residence in Dartmoor was being investigated as a homicide. Initially deemed non-criminal by Police Scotland, they later disclosed on Thursday that Herbert had been arrested and charged with an offense, with specific details of the charge set to be disclosed at her initial court appearance.

Aberdeen University, where Heather Herbert serves as a web developer, is also addressing the situation. The institution’s Principal and Vice Chancellor, Professor Peter Edwards, emphasized the university’s firm stance against violence and hateful conduct, confirming a thorough investigation into the comments was underway as a top priority.

Acknowledging the individual nature of the remarks, a university spokesperson reiterated that the expressed views do not reflect those of the institution, condemning any form of violent or hateful behavior. The university pledged full cooperation with Police Scotland during their inquiries.

Additionally, scrutiny over the comments has extended to the Scottish Greens, as Heather Herbert, formerly associated with Scottish Labour, became a member of the Scottish Greens in late 2021.

Meanwhile, the untimely demise of Ann Widdecombe, discovered at her Haytor residence in Devon last week at the age of 78, has led to a series of developments. A 28-year-old suspect from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was apprehended on suspicion of Ms. Widdecombe’s murder on Saturday and remains under interrogation. Subsequently, the individual faces additional allegations related to acts of terrorism, allowing authorities an extended detention period for further investigations.

The announcement from Police Scotland coincided with emotional tributes to Ann Widdecombe, including a poignant moment during a speech in London by former Conservative Party leader Liz Truss, who eulogized the late politician’s principled nature and unwavering commitment to core values.
