Keir Starmer expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability to prevail in the conflict with Russia and emphasized the importance of unwavering support from the UK. During his recent visit to the war-torn nation, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his solidarity with President Volodymr Zelensky as the illegal war instigated by Vladimir Putin enters its fifth year.

In an interview with The Mirror before stepping down, Starmer emphasized that Ukraine represents a crucial cause in the current era, underscoring the UK’s commitment to stand firmly by Ukraine under the leadership of his successor, Andy Burnham. Starmer conveyed a clear message of solidarity directly to President Zelensky to allay any concerns in Kyiv regarding the change in British leadership, highlighting the shared values of democracy and freedom that bind the two nations.

Assuring continued support for Ukraine under the new leadership, Starmer stated that the UK’s backing will remain steadfast without wavering. He expressed optimism about Ukraine’s prospects in the conflict, citing the resilience shown by Ukrainian forces in pushing back Russian advances and the effectiveness of international sanctions and military efforts.

President Zelensky, acknowledging his apprehensions about changes in leadership in the UK and France, emphasized the enduring strong bonds between nations that transcend individual leaders. He expressed hope for continued robust relations with the UK during and after the conflict, a sentiment echoed by Starmer, who assured Zelensky of the UK’s unwavering support.

During a cordial meeting at the Presidential Palace in Kyiv, President Zelensky honored Starmer with Ukraine’s “Order of Freedom,” the highest recognition bestowed upon a foreign dignitary. The two leaders paid tribute to Ukraine’s fallen heroes at the Wall of Remembrance before engaging in private discussions. Starmer also visited the site of a Russian attack on residential buildings in Kyiv and announced a €300 million aid package to enhance Ukraine’s air defense capabilities with advanced fighter jets.

This substantial investment will enable Ukraine to deploy a squadron of 16 Gripen E fighter jets by 2029, equipped for air combat, ground strikes, and reconnaissance missions. The commitment underscores the UK’s tangible support for Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, further solidifying the bond between the two nations.
