“Nurse Saves Patient’s Life from Vape Fire”

Published on

A nurse heroically intervened to save a patient’s life after the patient accidentally ignited their own head while attempting to vape in their hospital bed. Emmanuel Ndubuisi, a courageous nurse at Sunderland Royal Hospital, swiftly responded to extinguish the fire caused by a female patient who tried to smoke her e-cigarette while connected to an oxygen supply.

Emmanuel acted promptly, cutting off the oxygen and using a fire extinguisher to prevent further flames from spreading. Despite suffering burns, the patient, a woman in her 50s, was spared from serious harm due to Emmanuel’s quick actions.

Images from the incident depicted the intensity of the fire, which melted the oxygen mask and tube, causing damage to the patient’s bed and the room’s floor. Emmanuel’s bravery in containing the situation earned him a national award for his courage and quick decision-making that prevented a potential disaster in the ward.

Recalling the harrowing event, Emmanuel described feeling terrified but emphasized the importance of teamwork in handling the crisis. He expressed gratitude for the recognition, stating that the award motivates him to continue providing the best care for patients and colleagues.

The hospital’s director of nursing, Karen Sheard, praised Emmanuel as a shining example of dedication to the profession, embodying the organization’s core values of compassion, respect, teamwork, and honesty. The incident prompted a warning from South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust about the dangers of smoking and vaping in hospital premises, underscoring the importance of maintaining a safe environment for all.

Jim Charlton, the hospital’s fire safety and security manager, emphasized the need for compliance with no-smoking policies within healthcare settings to ensure the well-being of patients, visitors, and staff. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with smoking and vaping in hospitals, prompting continued efforts to educate individuals about fire hazards and safety protocols.

The Cavell Star Award recognizes exceptional care and commitment within the NHS, highlighting individuals like Emmanuel who demonstrate outstanding dedication to patient well-being and professional excellence.
