Britons planning a trip to popular European vacation destinations may encounter an unprecedented heatwave on the continent in the near future. Temperatures have already soared to the mid-40s in regions of Spain, France, and Italy this year. Even the UK is experiencing its third heatwave of 2026.
According to the GFS weather model, Europe is expected to experience temperatures well above the seasonal average next week. Southern Spain could see highs of 44C on Thursday, with Catalonia and Sicily reaching 42C and 44C, respectively.
Friday is anticipated to be even hotter, with potential record-breaking temperatures of 48C in Andalusia, southern Spain. Seville, a popular destination for British tourists, might reach temperatures of 46C or 47C based on the GFS model.
This forecast follows recent devastating wildfires in southern Spain that resulted in the tragic loss of 13 lives, including seven British nationals. Spain has issued various weather warnings, with alerts for high temperatures in regions like Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, and Murcia.
Experts caution that temperatures in Europe could soon hit 50C. Professor Bill McGuire from UCL warns that exceeding 50C is a real possibility, especially with the intensifying El Niño effect in the Pacific.
