Marks & Spencer and Next have excelled in providing top-quality school uniforms, according to a recent study conducted by consumer group Which?. Both retail giants received an impressive 81% rating, earning maximum five-star scores for durability, comfort, practicality, overall appearance, and value for money.
As the school year wraps up for the summer break, parents are turning their attention to preparing for the upcoming academic year, including purchasing essential school uniforms. This expense can be significant for many families, particularly given the strain of other household expenses amidst the current cost of living challenges.
Following Marks & Spencer and Next in the rankings are Tu from Sainsbury’s at 78%, John Lewis at 77%, and Asda’s George at 76%. Customers praised Marks & Spencer for the durability of their items, perfect sizing, excellent washability, and stain resistance, with some items lasting up to four years between siblings. Next customers also lauded the brand for its quality, durability, and longevity.
Next’s exceptional performance led to it being recognized as the top school uniform provider by Which?, with Marks & Spencer narrowly missing out due to concerns about its return policy terms and conditions. On the other end of the spectrum, Poundland’s Pepco brand received a lower customer satisfaction score of 66%.
While Marks & Spencer and Next were hailed for offering great value for money, it’s important to note that value does not necessarily equate to price. According to Which?, comparing prices across school uniform providers can be challenging due to variations in product options and pack sizes.
For instance, a pack of two polo shirts for a six to seven-year-old costs £6.50 at Marks & Spencer, £6 at Next, £7 at John Lewis, £3 at Sainsbury’s and Tesco, and only £1.75 at Aldi. Reena Sewraz, Which? retail editor, recommended considering Next and Marks & Spencer for their durability and value. For budget-conscious shoppers, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Tesco were also highlighted as good choices, striking a balance between fit, appearance, and price.
Sewraz added that the availability of more options should empower parents to make informed choices and save money. Aldi’s competitive pricing on school polo shirts exemplifies the potential savings families can enjoy by exploring various retailers.
