A man named Richard Murphy, who had been previously convicted as a sex offender, has been sentenced to prison for sexually assaulting a teenager at a party where his son was present. The incident took place in the garden of a neighboring house to where Murphy was residing under bail conditions. The court heard that Murphy’s son and the girl had engaged in consensual sexual activity before Murphy intervened. He proceeded to question the girl and then sexually assaulted her, warning her not to disclose the incident.

Murphy, aged 48 and residing in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, was already facing charges of sexual offenses against young girls at the time of this assault. Following a trial in Waterford, he was found guilty of rape and oral rape in October 2022, leading to his imprisonment for 11 years and six months, to be served consecutively to his current sentence. The victim, Angelique Schreuder, opted to reveal her identity to ensure Murphy was publicly named in connection with the case.

The presiding judge, Ms. Justice Karen O’Connor, emphasized the severity of Murphy’s actions, highlighting his dangerous behavior towards young girls. She noted his lack of remorse and refusal to accept guilt, imposing a harsh sentence due to the aggravating circumstances. The court also considered Murphy’s past criminal record involving similar offenses.
