Weight loss medications like Wegovy and Mounjaro may reduce the need for hospitalization among individuals struggling with alcohol dependence, as indicated by recent research. A study involving 41,000 users revealed that alcohol-dependent individuals taking these potent appetite-suppressing drugs were approximately 66% less likely to require hospital admission. The drugs, now available in both pill and injection forms, could potentially serve as a treatment option for addiction, according to researchers.
The study focused on individuals who initiated the use of Wegovy, Ozempic, or Mounjaro between January 2018 and December 2024. Dr. Hemalkumar Mehta from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the US noted that these findings suggest a possible role for GLP-1 receptor agonists in managing alcohol-use disorder.
Previous research has suggested that these drugs may help reduce alcohol cravings in individuals with addiction issues, leading to a decrease in the amount of alcohol consumed in one sitting. Weight loss medications work by mimicking the glucagon-like peptide (GLP) 1 hormone, which promotes feelings of fullness and regulates blood sugar levels. While Wegovy is prescribed for obesity and Ozempic for diabetes, a combined analysis of four similar studies reported that GLP-1 drugs significantly decreased the risk of alcohol-related hospital admissions compared to other diabetes and obesity medications.
Injections for weight loss were particularly effective, lowering the risk of alcohol-related hospital admissions by 63% and 65% among individuals with type 2 diabetes and obesity who also had alcohol problems. Recent data indicates that there were over one million alcohol-related hospital admissions in England during 2023/24.
Studies have also suggested that weight loss drugs offer various health benefits beyond weight management, including anti-inflammatory effects on multiple organ systems. GLP-1 medications have shown potential in addressing conditions such as heart disease, cancer, dementia, kidney disease, liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, addiction, and mental illness. However, these drugs can cause side effects like vomiting and require personalized support to maintain weight loss. Users may regain fat if they discontinue the medication without significant lifestyle changes, without regaining lost muscle and bone mass.
The findings, published in BMJ Open, hint at a possible role for GLP-1 medications in supporting individuals with alcohol dependence, but further research is necessary. Colin Angus, a professor of alcohol policy at Sheffield University Addictions Research Group, cautioned that while the study contributes to the evidence supporting the potential benefits of GLP-1 drugs in reducing alcohol-related harm, it is an observational study conducted in the US, where newer GLP-1 medications are costly. This may introduce important differences between individuals using GLP-1 drugs and those not, which might not be fully accounted for. Angus suggested viewing these findings as a part of the evolving evidence rather than a definitive conclusion.
