More than £100,000 has been raised for a three-year-old boy who suffered severe injuries after reportedly being thrown into a crocodile enclosure.
The incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo, situated near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, on June 18. The young child, who remains unnamed, has undergone multiple surgeries, including a nerve graft on his left arm, following the attack. Medical professionals treating him encountered extensive blood vessel damage, broken bones, and severe tissue injuries in various parts of his body.
According to a social media post from the zoo, the staff, including owners Andy and Tracey Johnson and their son Edward, bravely intervened by entering the crocodile enclosure to rescue the boy. Subsequently, a 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but was later released on bail due to being deemed unfit for questioning.
The suspect, reportedly with learning difficulties, was under the care of supervisors when he allegedly tossed the child over a 4ft barrier into the 15ft deep enclosure. An inquiry into the man’s supervision has been initiated.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched to aid the boy’s recovery and rehabilitation, surpassing £100,000 in donations, with a significant contribution of £2,500 from an anonymous donor. The child’s family expressed gratitude for the support, mentioning the progress he has made in his recovery, stating that they are hopeful for his continued improvement.
The family acknowledged the ongoing challenges ahead in terms of physical and psychological rehabilitation, with both parents taking temporary leave from work to assist their son during this period. They emphasized the uncertainties of the recovery process but highlighted their unwavering commitment to supporting their child throughout.
Addenbrookes Hospital, where the boy is receiving treatment, is under scrutiny after reports that his medical records were accessed by 40 staff members. Cambridge University Hospitals is investigating the matter and has self-referred to the Information Commissioner’s Office to determine the legitimacy of the record access.
