Samantha Morton from The Odyssey recently shared the sad news of her sister’s passing. In a recent interview, the 49-year-old actress revealed that her sister died earlier this year, not long after their father’s death.

Being one of nine siblings, Samantha mentioned that dealing with the loss of her sister while still coping with the aftermath of her father’s passing was challenging. Her father had a history of incarceration.

Her sister passed away in April this year at the age of 53. Samantha reflected on how her perspective on her past evolves with age, especially as her children grow older, while acknowledging that life events continue to unfold.

She expressed, “Regrettably, I lost my sister on April 22 this year; she was 53. I am still navigating the coroners’ processes and the emotional turmoil. I lost my biological father 18 months ago. Trauma. Thus, the past remains a constant in my life, and though I may not be completely okay next week, each day I wake up, I pray and plead for guidance.”

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Samantha further shared, “I was once told I was resilient when I was younger, but sometimes resilience is not a choice; it’s a necessity because without it, you’re as good as gone.”

During her early years, Samantha was placed in foster care after her parents split when she was only two. She credited acting as her savior after watching Ken Loach’s Kes in school, which fueled her passion for pursuing a career in the arts.

At her BAFTA Fellowship acceptance two years ago, she dedicated the award to “every child in care or has been in care and did not make it.” She is also the creative mind behind the BAFTA-winning film The Unloved, which delves into the life of a girl raised in foster care.

Following her parents’ separation, Samantha resided with her father while her mother entered a new relationship. However, at the tender age of eight, she was shuttled between various foster families alongside her siblings, feeling like an unwanted commodity.

Throughout the years, Samantha has been vocal about advocating for the rights of children in the care system, stressing the importance of sharing personal experiences, unlike many actors who refrain from doing so. She uses her platform to shed light on her own journey, recognizing the impact her story may have on others.

In a statement from last December, she asserted, “As an actor, I believe I have the right to voice my opinions due to my personal encounters. Nowadays, everyone is labeled a celebrity. I don’t see myself as one, but the public is tired of being preached to by self-proclaimed moral authorities.”

She added, “I approach it differently — with empathy, experience, and a commitment to raise awareness and educate rather than dictate or impose beliefs.”
