Great Train Robbery Memorabilia Auctioned: Signed Mail Bag & Gang Items up for Bidding

Published on

A collection of memorabilia from the infamous Great Train Robbery, where a gang of 10 thieves stole over £2 million, is set to be auctioned off. The robbers, who carried out one of Britain’s most notorious heists, intercepted a train, stole 120 mail sacks containing nearly £50 million in today’s value, and signed a mail bag that is now part of the auction lot.

The items, amassed by the seller’s father who had a keen interest in London’s underworld and criminal activities, include the signed mail bag resembling those crafted by the gang members while in prison post-robbery. The bag comes with a photograph of the Royal Mail Travelling Post Office train, which was halted during the heist in 1963 near Ledburn, Bucks, en route from Glasgow to London Euston.

During the robbery, the gang tampered with signals, attacked the train driver, and formed a human chain to unload the stolen cash into waiting vehicles. The bag bears the signatures of the mastermind Bruce Reynolds, along with Ronnie Biggs and other key members involved in the crime.

The auction will also feature a Monopoly banknote and various signed press photographs of the gang members. The estimated price for the mail bag is £70 to £100, while the second lot, including the Monopoly-related items, is expected to fetch £100 to £150. Ewbank’s Auctions in Surrey will host the auction on Friday, August 28.
