A young boy, aged nine, who has endured an eight-year wait for a heart transplant, has finally received the life-saving procedure. Dáithí Mac Gabhann was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) at birth in 2016, a rare condition that affects the development of the left side of the heart. His initial major surgery took place when he was just four days old.

After a prolonged period of anticipation for a donor heart, the boy’s courageous journey led to positive changes in Northern Ireland’s organ donation legislation. His family expressed immense gratitude upon announcing his successful heart transplant, performed at the NHS Freeman Hospital in Newcastle.

Accompanied by cheers from nurses and the iconic Rocky theme song, Dáithí left the hospital ward symbolizing a new chapter in his life. His family shared the emotional moment on social media, highlighting his resilience and determination.

Following the surgery, Dáithí will remain in Newcastle for three weeks before returning home to Northern Ireland. His medical history includes a bypass operation at four days old and subsequent complications with his heart valves, necessitating the need for a heart transplant. The community rallied behind the Donate4Dáithí campaign, advocating for organ donation awareness and legislative changes, which ultimately led to the implementation of “Dáithí’s Law” in Northern Ireland. This law transformed the organ donation process to an opt-out system, aligning with the rest of the United Kingdom.
