A written apology by Robert Bush, a disgraced funeral director, has triggered anger among the families affected by his wrongdoings. Bush, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison at Hull Crown Court, failed to properly handle burials and cremations, resulting in families receiving incorrect ashes, including those of unrelated individuals and even an animal. The discovery of approximately 35 bodies and over 100 sets of ashes at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull led to Bush’s arrest following a tip-off in March 2024.

In response to the apology letter, Jasmine Beverley, whose son’s remains were found at the funeral home nearly two years after his stillbirth, described the letter as “cold and condescending.” She expressed disbelief and anger at the apology, stating that it lacked sincerity and seemed insincere, almost as if it were scripted by a chatbot.

Jasmine highlighted the lack of acknowledgment of Bush’s actions in the letter, emphasizing that the memories of her son are now intertwined with the mismanagement by Bush. She expressed ongoing distress and the need for a public inquiry to address the situation.

Bush admitted to 67 offenses, including preventing lawful burials and theft from charities. Prosecutors described his operation as “shambolic and chaotic,” causing extreme emotional distress to the families involved.
