An enormous basking shark has been sighted swimming near Peel on the Isle of Man, just off the coast of the British Isles. The massive creature, with a dorsal fin slicing through the water, approached sightseers aboard a boat, creating a dramatic scene.

Despite its intimidating size, the basking shark is a harmless species, known for its gentle behavior. Nicholas Lewis from Casey J Fishing Trips mentioned that the waters have seen a resurgence of these 25-foot-long sharks after many years.

Basking sharks rank as the world’s second-largest fish, following the whale shark, and are among the few shark types that feed on plankton, along with the whale shark and the elusive megamouth shark. These peaceful giants are often spotted swimming solo or in small groups, leisurely filtering seawater through their massive mouths.

The Isle of Man has gained recognition as a prominent basking shark destination, with numerous sightings reported annually. It is estimated that around 90 identified basking sharks inhabit these waters, which serve as a favored breeding location for these magnificent creatures.

The Isle of Man has a rich history of basking shark research, with initiatives like The Basking Shark Project in the ’80s and ’90s significantly contributing to raising awareness and conservation efforts. These efforts led to the inclusion of basking sharks in protected species lists in the Isle of Man and the UK.

Known for their colossal size, basking sharks can reach lengths of about 25 feet, with some specimens growing up to 40 feet. These slow-moving creatures can weigh up to six tonnes and filter an impressive 2,000 tonnes of seawater per hour through their mouths.

Numerous legends of sea monsters have been linked to basking shark sightings, with some cases, like a basking shark carcass mistaken for a prehistoric plesiosaurus by Japanese fishermen, fueling such folklore.
