Morrisons is set to implement AI-driven checkout technology in 200 of its stores, aiming to significantly reduce waiting times for customers. The supermarket chain’s new Evercheck system utilizes real-time computer vision to cross-reference scanned items with those visible in a shopper’s cart, prompting customers to address any discrepancies gently.

This technology, developed by Everseen, is being introduced after a successful trial period and is expected to streamline the checkout process, leading to fewer delays, shorter queues, and reduced reliance on staff for common issues. Morrisons will be the first supermarket to deploy this system on a large scale.

The software will integrate seamlessly with the existing self-checkout systems at Morrisons stores, enhancing the overall customer experience without replacing traditional checkout methods. Francesca Bezoari, Morrisons’ Store Support Office Director, highlighted that this partnership with Everseen will enhance checkout efficiency while empowering staff to deliver exceptional service.

Everseen emphasized that the AI technology focuses on improving the checkout experience by aiding customers with prompt error corrections, allowing store employees to focus more on customer assistance. The system does not use facial recognition but instead analyzes transactions for accuracy without profiling individuals.

Joe White, CEO of Everseen, emphasized that Morrisons’ adoption of their Vision AI platform aims to enhance customer satisfaction without compromising operational efficiency. Everseen’s technology, already in use at over 150,000 checkouts worldwide, is poised to support Morrisons’ operational transformation.

With around 500 supermarkets in operation, Morrisons plans to deploy the new technology in a significant portion of its larger stores. The specific locations and completion timeline for the rollout have not been disclosed yet.
