During the peak of the school holidays, numerous families visited the Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Cambs, yet only a handful ventured into the Tropical House where the unnamed child was harmed by a crocodile bite.
A witness, who spent ten minutes inside the house, observed only one adult with a young child, roughly seven years old, while families with strollers passed by without stopping.
Pictures and videos taken inside the enclosure show deserted elevated walkways with safety barriers, creating a quiet and solemn ambiance. Signs both inside and outside the Tropical House emphasize the need for children to be supervised at all times and caution against carrying them on shoulders or handrails.
Within the building reside various crocodile species, including Nile, Saltwater, and Siamese.
The rest of the zoo, featuring a steakhouse, tea room, and shop, was bustling with families enjoying the school break, contrasting the somber atmosphere in the Tropical House.
Authorities responded to a distress call at the family-owned zoo on June 18 regarding an incident involving the toddler entering the crocodile enclosure. A 30-year-old man, reportedly with learning challenges and under caregiver supervision, was arrested but later released on bail due to his inability to be interviewed.
Owner Tracey Johnson, 55, was praised for her bravery in rescuing the boy from the crocodile pen, risking encounters with large Nile crocodiles.
Chris Newman, 67, from the National Centre for Reptile Welfare, commended Tracey as a courageous individual. The boy, now in stable condition after the incident, has been receiving treatment at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge for approximately six weeks.
The child underwent a nerve graft on his left arm, with hopes of restoring function in his hand. Additionally, he underwent a lengthy surgery shortly after the incident, addressing severe tissue damage in his arms, neck, head, and face.
In a statement from the boy’s family, they expressed relief and joy over his progress, from uncertainty about his survival to witnessing him talking, playing with his feet, and smiling again.
An inquiry under the Care Act 2014 has been initiated by Norfolk County Council to safeguard vulnerable adults from harm, although they were not responsible for the care of the arrested man.
