“From Biomedical Engineering to Trail Guide: Embracing a New Path”

Published on

Grace Stelmachowicz, a resident of Squamish, B.C., shares her journey from following a traditional path of education and career to embracing seasonal work in the outdoors. Raised with the belief that success meant pursuing higher education, landing a job in a chosen field, settling down, and starting a family, Grace found herself diverging from this trajectory in 2016.

After completing her second year of biomedical engineering at the University of Guelph, Grace aimed to secure a summer engineering position to enhance her resume but ended up working at a horseback riding outfit in Banff National Park. Despite this deviation from her planned career path, Grace drew on her childhood experience of riding horses on her family farm in southern Ontario to excel in her new role guiding guests through the picturesque Rockies.

The unconventional job allowed Grace to appreciate life beyond the confines of a traditional office setting. She found joy in simple moments like quiet mornings and the beauty of nature, even during challenging 16-hour workdays. Through seasonal work, Grace encountered diverse individuals from various backgrounds, each offering a unique perspective on what constitutes a fulfilling life.

The bonds formed during her time as a trail guide were profound and lasting, unlike any she had experienced in other environments. Although farewells were inevitable as seasonal workers parted ways, the connections made were invaluable. These relationships reshaped Grace’s definition of success, emphasizing the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences and embracing diverse paths to personal fulfillment.

Despite initial skepticism from her family about deviating from her engineering degree, Grace’s journey through seasonal work ultimately led her to a career in international sales, enabling her to continue exploring the world. The challenges she faced as a guide honed her problem-solving skills and self-reliance, instilling a sense of confidence that continues to benefit her in her current role.

While her past self may have been disheartened by straying from the engineering field, present-day Grace celebrates the life she has crafted by following her passion. Her experiences have broadened her perspective on success, encouraging others to step out of their comfort zones, embrace new opportunities, and savor the adventure that life has to offer.
