“Toronto Woman Steps Up as Brother’s Caregiver”

Published on

Simone Abrahamsohn, a Toronto resident, shared her experience of facing new responsibilities after losing her mother this summer. She has taken on the role of primary caregiver for her older brother, Stuart, who is also her roommate. Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily tasks like feeding, transfers, grooming, and managing his emotions.

Growing up, Simone struggled with her brother’s neurodivergent behaviors, feeling embarrassed and saddened by societal misunderstandings. Despite their differences, Simone recognizes similarities between herself and Stuart, both facing challenges related to neurodivergence. She has learned to manage her own ADHD tendencies to create a harmonious living environment for both siblings.

Simone’s journey includes overcoming past regrets for not advocating for Stuart during difficult times, such as school expulsions and social withdrawal due to bullying. As adults sharing a living space, she now prioritizes communication and mutual respect, ensuring Stuart’s agency and involvement in decision-making.

While sacrifices like giving up acting classes have been necessary to accommodate Stuart’s needs, Simone values their bond and strives to create a supportive and understanding environment for their unique situation. This second chance to be a better sibling motivates her to embrace the present and build a fulfilling relationship with Stuart.

Simone’s story highlights the importance of acceptance, empathy, and proactive support for neurodivergent individuals within familial relationships.
