The Democratic Republic of Congo announced on Tuesday that the number of confirmed Ebola fatalities has risen to 2,011, marking a significant milestone in what health authorities have labeled as the most rapidly spreading outbreak ever recorded. Data from Congo’s public health institute, as reported by Reuters, indicates a total of 4,381 confirmed cases spanning five provinces.
Factors such as delayed detection, ongoing conflict, and strained healthcare services have contributed to the accelerated spread of the virus compared to previous outbreaks. This 17th outbreak in Congo, caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, lacks approved vaccines or treatments. The World Health Organization has classified the outbreak, which has also extended to neighboring Uganda, as a global health emergency.
A recent report published in the Science journal revealed that transmission likely began in January or earlier in Ituri province, with over 500 suspected cases identified between mid-January and May 15. Challenges such as medical shortages and insecurity in affected regions have hindered efforts to track contacts, isolate patients, and contain transmission.
Congo’s government data shows that this outbreak is second in scale only to West Africa’s 2014-2016 Ebola crisis, which recorded 28,616 cases and 11,310 deaths across Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Unlike the West African outbreak, which took nearly five months to reach 1,000 deaths, the current situation in Congo has surpassed 2,000 deaths in less than three months.
During the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in Congo, it took slightly over a year to reach 2,000 deaths, whereas the current outbreak has seen a rapid increase from 1,000 to 2,000 deaths in under a month, highlighting the swift spread of the virus.
To aid in containment efforts, local militias have been mobilized to support the government’s response, aiming to address community resistance and mistrust that have complicated containment measures. In North Kivu province, a task force comprising pro-government militia members and civil society groups has been established in Butembo to safeguard Ebola responders, enforce quarantine protocols, and protect healthcare workers and facilities. The task force leader, Guy Ngavo, emphasized the necessity of compliance with quarantine orders and warned of potential consequences, including forcible transport to treatment centers and, in cases of repeated defiance, disciplinary measures such as whipping.
