Dog in Downtown Edmonton Recovers from Opioid Poisoning

Published on

Valeria Vecchio and her dog Clifford were strolling through a park in downtown Edmonton as part of their usual routine when she noticed a sudden change in her dog’s behavior. Clifford, a one-year-old mix of poodle and Cavalier King Charles spaniel, became lethargic, exhibited pale gums and tongue, and started vomiting. Concerned, Vecchio carried him home from Railtown Park, located just north of the High Level Bridge on 110th Street, speculating whether he had ingested something harmful.

As Clifford’s condition worsened, with shallow breathing and a slowed heart rate, Vecchio quickly arranged for an Uber to take them to the vet. During the ride, she stayed vigilant, gently nudging Clifford to prevent him from falling asleep. At the animal hospital, the vet suspected opioid toxicity and promptly administered naloxone, leading to Clifford’s full recovery.

Vecchio expressed that the vet’s suspicion was not surprising to her, given the prevalence of open drug consumption in public areas, especially in downtown Edmonton. Dr. Jami Frederick, the president of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association and an emergency veterinarian, highlighted the increasing occurrence of opioid ingestion in pets in Edmonton, particularly during the summer months when pet owners frequent public spaces.

Frederick emphasized the importance of pet owners carrying naloxone kits while out with their pets and advised seeking immediate veterinary care if opioid toxicity is suspected. She mentioned that naloxone might require repeated doses and recommended monitoring in a veterinary hospital for the safety of the pets. The City of Edmonton, in response to the incident, mentioned its regular maintenance practices regarding litter and debris removal from public areas.

Vecchio expressed her intent to be more cautious about choosing walking locations for Clifford, avoiding areas with potential drug exposure risks. She also pledged to closely monitor Clifford’s interactions with his surroundings. Vecchio’s deep affection for Clifford was evident as she emphasized his importance and her commitment to his well-being.
