Former Chinese premier Zhu Rongji has passed away at the age of 97, as reported by state media. The official Xinhua news agency announced that Zhu succumbed to illness in Beijing around 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Known for being an impatient and sharp-tongued reformer, Zhu played a pivotal role in kickstarting China’s rapid economic growth in the 1990s by implementing significant changes in the state industry and guiding the nation into the World Trade Organization.
Despite facing challenges in the past, including being exiled to rural areas for supporting reforms in other communist nations, Zhu spearheaded a series of transformative reforms during his tenure as premier from 1998 to 2003. His initiatives, which aimed at enhancing the efficiency and profitability of state-owned enterprises, led to millions of job cuts but ultimately propelled China to become the world’s second-largest economy after the United States in 2010.
By building on Deng Xiaoping’s reforms from 1979, Zhu played a crucial role in steering China towards historic milestones such as its accession to the WTO, a move that significantly boosted China’s status as the world’s top exporter. These changes contributed to sustaining economic growth above eight percent annually from 2000 to 2010, reaching a peak of 14.2 percent in 2007.
Throughout his career, Zhu gained popularity for his straightforward approach, often criticizing bureaucratic inefficiencies and corruption, and taking responsibility for governmental shortcomings.
