Ukraine launched an attack on the petroleum hub of Nizhnekamsk in central Tatarstan on Monday, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals and injuries to 78 others, as confirmed by local authorities. This incident marks one of the deadliest assaults within Russia during the ongoing conflict that has spanned over four years.
The Ukrainian military reported targeting an oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, situated approximately 1,200 kilometers east of the Ukrainian border and home to two refineries and a petrochemical plant. According to Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of Tatarstan, Nizhnekamsk was subjected to a significant drone attack on Monday morning, focusing on both industrial and civilian facilities.
Among the casualties were nine individuals who lost their lives when a drone struck a hostel, including nationals from Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Uzbekistan consulate in Tatarstan confirmed the deaths of seven Uzbek citizens. Tragically, a child was among the deceased, alongside the 75 individuals who sustained injuries, prompting the declaration of a day of mourning in Tatarstan.
In recent months, Ukraine has been consistently targeting Russian oil facilities using long-range drones, leading to fuel shortages in Russia, diminishing refining capabilities, and causing unrest among the Russian populace. Additionally, Ukrainian drones were responsible for igniting a fire at an industrial site in the Tyumen region of western Siberia, as reported by Governor Alexander Moor.
The Ukrainian General Staff disclosed that their forces had inflicted damage on a portion of a petrochemical complex in Tobolsk, also located in the Tyumen region, known for producing various critical materials. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s efforts to compel Russian President Vladimir Putin to engage in negotiations and cease the full-scale invasion initiated in February 2022. He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to responding to Russian attacks and highlighted Russia’s reluctance to end the ongoing conflict.
Furthermore, Russia has been conducting aerial assaults on Ukraine, targeting civilian areas with missiles, glide bombs, and drones, resulting in a significant number of civilian casualties. In a separate incident, a Russian glide bomb struck Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine, causing injuries to 24 individuals. The World Health Organization’s European office reported that one of its warehouses in Ukraine’s central Dnipro region was struck twice within 24 hours, leading to the destruction of emergency supplies intended for frontline health facilities, without any reported casualties.
