After a series of delays, Wabush Airport is set to restart flight operations on Wednesday as confirmed by PAL Airlines. The disruption was caused by the airport’s failure to meet federal firefighting and rescue requirements for commercial flights with more than 19 passengers due to a mechanical issue with a vehicle, according to Transport Canada.
In a social media announcement on Wednesday afternoon, PAL Airlines, the carrier serving Wabush Airport, stated that the necessary firefighting equipment for passenger flights has been reinstated. Flights 921, 922, 833, and 834 to and from the airport are scheduled to resume on Wednesday. Passengers impacted by the disruptions will be provided with updated travel details by the airline’s reservations team.
Before the resumption of flights, Labrador’s Member of Parliament expressed frustration over the repeated airport disruptions but remained optimistic about the situation being resolved. He highlighted the challenges faced due to maintenance issues with the airport’s fire trucks, leading to airport operations being temporarily halted. The required parts were swiftly delivered to Wabush from Edmonton to address the problem.
Over the past year, Wabush Airport has encountered various disruptions, including a temporary shutdown in October 2025 when firefighting services were mandated, extreme weather disruptions in December, and restrictions imposed in January that affected certain aircraft landings. PAL Airlines facilitated a charter flight to transport the necessary parts to Wabush to aid in the restoration of services.
Chris Bussey, co-founder of Advocates for Safer Airports in Canada, raised concerns about the broader issues at Wabush Airport, emphasizing the need for enhanced emergency response capabilities at Canadian airports. He called for improved resources, maintenance plans, and on-site mechanics to ensure preparedness for air traffic disasters. Bussey stressed the importance of proper firefighting equipment at airports in emergency situations, underscoring the critical need for readiness.
Unlike privately operated airports, Wabush Airport is under the ownership of Transport Canada, leading to discussions on regulatory oversight and emergency response preparedness. Efforts are underway to engage with stakeholders, politicians, and pilot associations to address concerns regarding emergency response capabilities at airports and to advocate for improved safety measures.
