A company in Saskatchewan is exploring the extraction of hydrogen from underground sources as an alternative to producing it from fossil fuels on a large scale. Max Power Mining, based in Regina, has initiated drilling at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan to potentially establish the world’s first significant commercial natural hydrogen system.

Hydrogen, a crucial element for various industrial processes like ammonia production and petroleum refining, is currently primarily sourced through energy-intensive methods, resulting in significant carbon emissions. The company aims to tap into natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, which can be extracted with lower greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing existing extraction techniques for natural gas and helium.

Natural hydrogen is formed underground through processes such as the reaction of oxygen with iron-rich rocks or radioactive decay of uranium and thorium. While rich natural hydrogen deposits are considered rare due to its volatile nature, recent discoveries in Canada, including Saskatchewan, northern Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, have sparked global interest in this potential energy source.

Challenges remain in extracting hydrogen from underground deposits, as many confirmed sites are dissolved in water. Max Power Mining has reported successful natural hydrogen gas flow from its drilling activities in Lawson Complex, indicating a potential significant resource. The company is currently assessing the feasibility of extraction and will release data as it progresses.

While the promise of natural hydrogen as a cleaner energy source is exciting, experts caution that its impact on decarbonization may be limited until more productive wells are developed globally. Ongoing research and exploration will be crucial in determining the viability and scalability of natural hydrogen as a green energy solution.
