Peter Maher, the iconic voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts for over three decades, has passed away at the age of 79. His death was confirmed on Thursday. Maher, who served as the team’s play-by-play commentator for radio broadcasts starting in 1980, called 33 consecutive seasons for the Flames.
Throughout his illustrious career, which included the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their journey to the finals in 2004, Maher was known for his enthusiasm and popular catchphrases such as “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” His impactful presence in the broadcasting world came to an end after the 2013-14 NHL season.
The Calgary Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones and fans, acknowledging that his voice had become an integral part of the Flames fan experience. Describing Maher as more than just a broadcaster, the Flames highlighted his unwavering dedication to the team and the community.
Hailing from Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher previously called Toronto Maple Leafs games for the CKO Radio Network. When the opportunity arose to join the Flames in Calgary following their relocation from Atlanta in 1980, Maher relocated to the western city to become the official voice of the team.
Renowned for his storytelling prowess, Maher’s impact extended beyond the Flames. He covered six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team’s games at the 2010 Winter Olympics, including Sidney Crosby’s historic “Golden Goal.” In 2006, Maher was honored with the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
Following his retirement, the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome was dedicated to Maher. Additionally, an annual award recognizing sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect, named after Maher, is presented by local media in Calgary to the Flames player embodying these virtues.
