“Yukon Child Welfare System Undergoes Positive Changes”

Published on

A child welfare advocate in Yukon has noted positive developments in the territory’s child welfare system, following recent critical reports. The Yukon Legislative Assembly’s standing committee on public accounts has expressed doubts regarding the territorial Health and Social Services department’s handling of concerns raised by the auditor general’s office. Recommendations from the legislative committee include addressing critical incidents, improving data tracking, and implementing necessary changes in group home policies.

Annette King, the territory’s child and youth advocate, emphasized that the findings align with the issues observed locally. She acknowledged ongoing changes and a shift towards accountability in the system. Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers declined an interview to review the recommendations received.

The legislative committee highlighted the importance of mandatory training for staff working with vulnerable clients, emphasizing the need for comprehensive plans to address staff vacancies and improve services in rural and First Nations communities. Concerns were raised about the shortage of social workers, calling for urgent actions to enhance the system.

NDP Leader Kate White, who chaired the legislative committee, emphasized the need for improved training standards and updated case management systems to better support workers and families in the system. The committee expects a prompt response from the department to address the recommendations put forth.

The child advocate, Annette King, stressed the significance of cultural considerations in child welfare, especially in light of historical practices that have impacted Indigenous children. She remains hopeful for continued progress in advocating for the needs of children and youth in the territory.
