A global coalition of soccer fan associations has initiated a petition demanding the resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The petition, under the hashtag InfantinOut, also advocates for the restructuring of FIFA to prevent similar controversies in the future.
The petition condemns Infantino’s proposal to involve private investors in the World Cup, labeling it as a disgraceful act of betrayal towards the sport. The plan to commercialize the World Cup was abandoned by Infantino following intense backlash from the soccer community.
Among the fan groups supporting the petition are Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, the Independent Supporters Council in North America, and approximately 40 national fan organizations worldwide.
Despite facing calls for his resignation from various soccer bodies like UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation, Infantino has refused to step down. The petition criticizes his leadership style as undemocratic, emphasizing the need for transparency, accountability, and ethical governance within FIFA.
The petition highlights Infantino’s controversial backing of initiatives such as the failed European Super League project and the proposal to host World Cups every two years. It concludes by asserting that Infantino’s resignation is crucial for FIFA’s credibility and the integrity of the sport.
