A recent fundraising initiative is inspired by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s mention of the term “hydronym” to promote awareness and conservation efforts for Lake Ontario. Branded By Collins, a clothing company in London, Ontario, has introduced T-shirts featuring the slogan, “My hydronyms are Lake & Ontario,” with a portion of the sales proceeds benefiting Swim Drink Fish Canada, a national charity in Toronto dedicated to safeguarding the lake’s cleanliness.
Gregary Ford, the vice-president and waterkeeper of the charity, expressed enthusiasm for the increased attention and pride being shown towards Lake Ontario. The concept for the campaign arose following U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America during recent trade disputes between the two nations.
Carney responded to Trump’s suggestion by emphasizing the historical significance of the name “Lake Ontario,” which has existed for over 400 years. The move to rename the lake has drawn criticism from political leaders in both countries, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiling a sign affirming the lake’s original name in Winona.
Branded By Collins initiated the production of the T-shirts in collaboration with Curious Public, a public relations firm, showcasing their Canadian pride and support for the cause. The company’s merchandise, including hats, T-shirts, sweaters, and hoodies, now contributes ten dollars from each sale towards Swim Drink Fish Canada’s initiatives.
Ford highlighted the importance of protecting Lake Ontario from various environmental threats such as climate change and invasive species. He noted that the campaign has sparked renewed interest in the lake’s Indigenous heritage and the need for collective efforts to ensure its preservation.
