Waterloo Researcher Wins Ig Nobel Physics Prize

Published on

University of Waterloo doctoral candidate Kaveeshan Thurairajah may not have a Nobel Prize, but he can proudly claim an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a playful parody of the prestigious Nobel Prizes, honor the most unconventional and innovative research in academia.

Thurairajah and his team were awarded the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on creating a splash-free urinal. Their research involved both theoretical and experimental approaches to designing urinals that minimize splashing. Their supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, surprised Thurairajah with the news of their victory, leading to a celebratory moment with wine served in espresso cups.

The team developed various urinal prototypes, including the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to determine the most effective and easy-to-clean option. Thurairajah explained that the Nautilus design was superior due to its reduced splash and ease of maintenance.

Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues, adorned in bright yellow raincoats, were prepared to receive accolades from their peers in the scientific community. Despite the humorous nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized its practical value in improving public restroom facilities and creating more welcoming environments.

Apart from the urinal research, other Canadian teams were recognized at the ceremony for studies on topics such as unethical behavior among the upper class and innovative uses of mosquito proboscises in 3D printing. The Ig Nobel Awards, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, were held in Europe for the first time due to visa concerns, reflecting the international nature of scientific collaboration.

Thurairajah highlighted the importance of global cooperation in the scientific community, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to interact with researchers from diverse backgrounds. He emphasized the significance of inclusivity and international collaboration in advancing scientific knowledge and innovation.
