“CIA Director Ratcliffe Visits Moscow Amid Rising US-Russia Tensions”

Published on

CIA director John Ratcliffe made a trip to Moscow to hold discussions with Russian officials, as per reports from various U.S. media sources. This visit marks the first known trip by a U.S. intelligence head to the Russian capital since Ratcliffe’s predecessor, William Burns, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in November 2021. Approximately three months post that encounter, Putin initiated the invasion of Ukraine.

Media outlets including CBS News and Axios disclosed the visit by Ratcliffe, who previously served as the director of national intelligence in Donald Trump’s first presidential term. Details regarding the purpose of the meetings or the specific agenda were not disclosed by the reports from ABC News, CNN, and the Wall Street Journal.

The CIA declined to provide any comments on the matter, while Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov neither confirmed nor denied the report, stating that Putin had no scheduled meeting with Ratcliffe.

There were reports that the U.S. had requested Ukraine to refrain from conducting airstrikes in certain Russian regions between Monday and Wednesday of that week to ensure the safe passage of a senior U.S. official’s flight to Moscow. The source providing this information did not offer further details, with the Financial Times being the first to report on the U.S.’ message to Ukraine.

In a separate development, the U.S. issued warnings to countries to sever their business connections with Iran or face secondary sanctions, as part of efforts to intensify economic pressure in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran.

It is noteworthy that the U.S. currently does not have an ambassador in Russia, which maintains a strong strategic alliance with Iran, involving substantial military, economic, and diplomatic cooperation. Reports suggest that Tehran supplied drones to Moscow for its operations in Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of providing similar drones to Iran, as per a Ukrainian intelligence assessment disclosed by Reuters. The assessment also indicated that Russia assisted Iran with satellite imagery to target U.S. facilities in the Middle East, a claim that Moscow has denied, expressing willingness to assist in resolving the U.S.-Iran tensions.
