French Islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon Join N.L. Summer Games

At the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, 10 regions are participating, with one region turning the event into an international competition. The French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, situated off the south coast of Newfoundland, have sent both boys and girls soccer teams to Corner Brook for the Games.

The boys’ team kicked off their tournament on Thursday with a 1-0 loss to Team Eastern. Soccer holds significant importance in St. Pierre, and players are thrilled to have the opportunity to compete in Newfoundland, broadening their horizons in the process.

Arthur Champdoizeau, a 15-year-old player, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We don’t face many challenges in St. Pierre. Coming to Corner Brook for the N.L. Games is a fantastic experience for us and my team.” Antony Cronsteadt, aged 14, highlighted the rarity of playing soccer on the island and appreciated the new experience it brings.

Team manager Guillaume Grasset emphasized the value of events like the N.L. Games in player development, fostering new friendships, and creating lasting memories. The closing ceremonies for the Games are scheduled for Saturday, offering a platform for the players to showcase their talents.
