“Republican Lawmakers Rally Behind Trump in Trade Spat with Canada”

Published on

Republican lawmakers in the U.S. Congress are standing behind President Donald Trump in his trade dispute with Canada, placing blame on Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration for walking away from negotiations. A group of GOP House members convened on Capitol Hill for a private session with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to discuss tariffs.

While some Republicans are privately worried that escalating tariffs could harm their chances in the upcoming midterm elections, those who spoke with CBC News expressed overall support for the president’s trade tactics. Texas Representative August Pfluger commended Trump for bringing back manufacturing jobs and pointed fingers at Ottawa for instigating the trade conflict.

Another congressman, Brian Mast from Florida, criticized Canada for rejecting what he described as a favorable deal offered to them. Following the closed-door meeting, Greer declined to comment on the status of negotiations with Canada.

Meanwhile, at the White House, President Trump reiterated his belief that Canada has taken advantage of the U.S. economically for years. Trump specifically highlighted restrictions on American banks operating in Canada as a major grievance.

On the political front, most Congressional Republicans are backing Trump’s stance on the trade war with Canada, despite public opinion polls showing disapproval. Missouri Representative Eric Burlison cautioned against Canada imposing retaliatory tariffs, emphasizing the economic dependence of Canada on the U.S.

Despite concerns about the trade war’s impact on voters, South Carolina Representative Ralph Norman stressed the need for the White House to address the real worries expressed by constituents. Norman indicated that Greer was open to discussing how tariffs are affecting individual states.
