Liberal MP Lori Idlout Breached Conflict of Interest Code

Published on

Liberal MP Lori Idlout has been found to have breached the conflict of interest code of Parliament by Ottawa’s ethics commissioner. However, the commissioner recommended that no penalties be imposed on her. The investigation by Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Konrad von Finckenstein focused on Idlout’s purchases from her own shop, Carvings Nunavut, which she charged to the House of Commons. Idlout later reimbursed the House, explaining that she had mistakenly submitted the items.

In response to the findings, Idlout expressed gratitude to the commissioner for the report and acknowledged the seriousness of the matter. She clarified that at the time of the purchases, she did not perceive them as benefiting her personal interests, as she does not derive any income from the businesses involved.

Commissioner Finckenstein characterized Idlout’s actions as errors of judgment made in good faith. He noted that Idlout promptly repaid the House upon realizing the errors, demonstrating a sincere effort to rectify the situation. Therefore, Finckenstein recommended against imposing any sanctions on Idlout.

Idlout, who is the sole shareholder and director of Carvings Nunavut, claimed 13 purchases as “gifts given as a matter of protocol,” with four of them being from her own business. The purchases from Carvings Nunavut totaled $1,756 and were all made in 2025. The largest purchase, amounting to $1,380, consisted of various items such as cards, tote bags, keychains, and sculptures, which were gifted to First Nations leaders and elders at an NDP national caucus meeting.

Other purchases included a wall hanging, a lapel pin, and a set of items for specific individuals, all presented as gifts. The commissioner highlighted that these transactions violated the code of ethics, which prohibits MPs from advancing their private interests.

Furthermore, the expenses were incurred during Idlout’s tenure as an NDP MP before she switched to the Liberal Party in March 2026. The investigation was prompted by a request from Conservative MP Michael Barrett following concerns about Idlout’s actions under the conflict of interest code.

In response to criticism and the investigation, Idlout expressed regret for her judgment lapse and emphasized her commitment to learning from the experience and cooperating with the commissioner’s guidance in the future.
