Celebrated actor and advocate for Parkinson’s disease, Michael J. Fox, expressed feelings of “pride” and “humility” as he was honored with a promotion to the companion level of the Order of Canada at Rideau Hall. The crowd gave him a standing ovation while Governor General Louise Arbour officially bestowed the recognition in acknowledgment of his impactful global advocacy and candid discussions about Parkinson’s disease.
Reflecting on the ceremony, Fox shared, “It’s a mix of emotions. Primarily, it’s about my upbringing in Canada, my love for the country, its values, and its journey of progress and resilience.” He emphasized his Canadian roots, influenced by the country’s music and cultural richness, shaping him into a uniquely Canadian individual at the age of 65.
Parkinson’s disease, a progressive nervous system disorder characterized by tremors and mobility issues, has been a focal point for Fox since publicly disclosing his diagnosis in 1998. Through fundraising efforts and sharing personal experiences, he has contributed significantly to Parkinson’s research and raising awareness about the challenges faced by those living with the condition.
During the Order of Canada ceremony, Fox credited Canada as a pioneer in Parkinson’s research, highlighting advancements such as deep brain stimulation. His promotion to the companion level underscores his notable contributions and dedication to the cause.
Governor General Arbour commended Fox and the other 50 honorees for their excellence and commitment to making a positive impact. She emphasized the importance of using talent and influence to benefit others, praising Fox as a shining example of community engagement and sustainable progress.
In addition to Fox’s recognition, notable figures like Yusuf Altintas, Nada Jabado, Stephen Poloz, Ruth Elsie Abernethy, Susanne Craig, Colin Roswell Clarke, Marcelle Dubois, and Patrick Joseph Lahey were also honored for their significant contributions across various fields, ranging from academia to journalism and the arts. Each inductee’s work was acknowledged as vital in shaping a better future for Canada and beyond.
