Colchester County residents are expressing concerns about police communication after weeks of speculation regarding the discovery of human remains near Debert, Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia RCMP recently confirmed the finding of a man’s remains on July 22.
Residents in the area had been discussing the discovery of remains since late July, with online rumors suggesting the discovery of four bodies. However, when asked by CBC News about these rumors on August 7, police denied their accuracy and did not disclose that only one person’s remains had been found.
An RCMP spokesperson mentioned that details about the discovery and police actions were shared when deemed appropriate to support the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the importance of preserving the integrity of the investigative process and ensuring proper evidence collection and assessment.
Several residents reported seeing officers searching a clearcut area accessible via a service road off Highway 4 near Debert. While the RCMP did not provide a specific location beyond a “wooded area in the vicinity of Debert,” locals, including Abby Clusiaux, who resides nearby, observed police activity in the neighborhood.
Clusiaux expressed disappointment over the lack of communication, highlighting the unsettling nature of the incident for the community still recovering from the tragic events of the 2020 Nova Scotia mass shooting. The RCMP assured the public that there is no immediate threat associated with the human remains but suspect foul play in the man’s death.
The provincial medical examiner is collaborating with the police to establish the man’s identity and determine the cause of death. Colchester North MLA Tom Taggart expressed confidence in the ongoing RCMP investigation, praising the recent positive relationship he has had with the authorities.
Despite declining an on-camera interview request, the Colchester District RCMP stated that the investigation is in its early stages, and no further information can be disclosed at this time.
