Algoma Steel’s electric arc furnace (EAF) in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, is currently not operational due to a power outage. The furnace was automatically shut down upon detecting an anomaly. The issue is believed to be related to a turbine at the Lake Superior Generating Station.
In response, the company has decided to advance a scheduled maintenance outage originally planned for later in the quarter while repair work is in progress. This strategic move aims to minimize overall downtime throughout the year and enhance the company’s position when operations resume.
Algoma Steel anticipates that the outage may extend up to 21 days. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), responsible for managing Ontario’s power system, is collaborating with Algoma Steel to explore potential temporary alternative power solutions following the unexpected generator loss.
Despite the furnace shutdown, Algoma Steel assures that its finishing operations will continue without disrupting customer orders.
