Sibling Defends Student Arrested in FBI Op

The sibling of a student attending a university in Ontario, who was apprehended in a counter-intelligence operation by the FBI, has refuted claims that her brother was knowingly engaged in espionage for Beijing. Meixuan Wang dismissed the allegations in a social media post, comparing the accusations to an absurd scenario.

Weiheng Zeng, a Chinese national studying at the University of Waterloo, was arrested at the U.S.-Canada border last month and charged with providing false information. Zeng reportedly confessed to receiving payments for tasks from an individual he believed to be linked to a Chinese security agency.

The criminal complaint, lodged in a Michigan court, includes surveillance footage showing a man attempting unauthorized activities at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport in April. Zeng admitted to photographing aircraft and tail numbers as instructed by his contact in exchange for monetary compensation.

Allegations in the complaint suggest activities akin to espionage, as stated by prosecutor Alyse Wu during the court proceedings. The case remains under investigation, according to Gina Balaya from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On his public Instagram account under the name Billy, Zeng describes himself as a photography enthusiast and a student at the University of Waterloo. His profile showcases aircraft photos, including those from Canadian air shows.

Wang, also known as Jade, disclosed that her brother has a keen interest in airplanes and is on the autism spectrum. She mentioned that Zeng might not have comprehended the seriousness of the situation when questioned by U.S. border authorities.

Zeng is currently in custody and is represented by Rhonda Brazile, a court-appointed federal defender. Scheduled for a court appearance next week, Zeng has not sought release on bail. Law enforcement agencies, including the RCMP and CSIS, are aware of the case but have not disclosed their involvement in the FBI’s investigation.

Experts speculate that individuals like Zeng, who engage in tasks for intelligence entities, are often referred to as “co-optees.” The exact nature of Zeng’s involvement in the espionage-related activities remains a subject of investigation and debate.
