The ByWard Market District Authority (BMDA) has announced the departure of its executive director, Victoria Williston, after a brief seven-month tenure. The decision was made by the organization’s board, citing a need to take a new direction. The BMDA has chosen not to disclose further details, describing the matter as internal and private. No replacement for the executive director role has been named at this time.
Victoria Williston expressed pride in her accomplishments during her time with the BMDA, highlighting achievements such as the establishment of the Carré ByWard Square live music venue and the Night Ambassador Program. She acknowledged the collaborative effort that led to positive changes in the district, stating, “The dial moved. You can see it walking through the district any given day. More people, more life, more reason to stay a while. That shift belongs to a lot of hands, and I’m glad mine were among them.”
Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, a member of the BMDA board, voiced support for the decision to part ways with Williston, noting concerns about the need for stronger leadership. Williston assumed the role of executive director in January, succeeding Zachary Dayler. Prior to her appointment, she served as the organization’s communications and marketing manager.
In response to the news, vendors in the market expressed growing frustrations with the BMDA. Maxine Hill, owner of Canada in a Basket, criticized the organization for making decisions that impact businesses without prior consultation. Another vendor, Jill Anguaya of Tickled Pink, described the sudden change in leadership as unexpected, given Williston’s recent appointment. Both vendors called for greater vendor representation on the BMDA board to address their concerns effectively.
