“WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert Announces Retirement”

Published on

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has announced her retirement by the end of this year, wrapping up her more than seven years leading the league with notable successes and challenges. She becomes the second-longest serving WNBA president or commissioner and notably played a key role in securing a groundbreaking collective bargaining agreement earlier this year, resulting in the introduction of million-dollar player salaries.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised Engelbert’s leadership during a period of significant growth for the WNBA, acknowledging her dedication to advancing women’s basketball. Engelbert, who will turn 62 in November, revealed that she had been contemplating retirement for several months, emphasizing the completion of key milestones such as the collective bargaining agreement, long-term media rights deal, and league expansion.

Engelbert clarified that her decision to step down was entirely her own and not influenced by external pressures. She mentioned having laid the groundwork for a smooth transition by working on a succession plan in recent years, noting the presence of both internal and external candidates being considered to take over the leadership role.

Expressing mixed emotions about her departure, Engelbert highlighted the WNBA’s remarkable growth under her tenure, including improved television ratings, robust attendance, and team expansion. She pointed out the league’s financial transformation and the enhanced value of WNBA franchises during her time as commissioner.

Despite the achievements, Engelbert acknowledged facing challenges such as social media criticism towards players and discussions about transgender athletes in the league. She reiterated her commitment to supporting players and ensuring a safe environment while addressing any eligibility issues collectively with the players’ association.

Looking ahead, Engelbert revealed her retirement plans to focus on spending more time with her family, particularly her 90-year-old mother and children. She humorously shared her family’s excitement for her retirement, as they eagerly anticipate more quality time together starting January 1.
