“Study Shows Ongoing Decline in Gulf of Mexico Marine Life Post-Deepwater Horizon Spill”

Published on

More than 16 years following one of the most devastating oil spills in history, a thorough study has revealed a significant ongoing decline in marine life in the Gulf of Mexico.

The explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, operated by BP off the Louisiana coast on April 20, 2010, resulted in the tragic loss of 11 lives and injuries to 17 individuals. Over the subsequent three months, approximately 4.9 million barrels of oil surged into the Gulf, causing a catastrophic impact on marine ecosystems that persists to this day.

According to Tracey Sutton, a biological oceanographer at the Guy Harvey Oceanographic Research Center of NOVA Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, numerous species experienced a notable decline ranging from 60 to 85 percent in the immediate aftermath of the spill. Sutton’s latest research, incorporating an additional eight years of in-depth analysis and sampling, has recently been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Unfortunately, the situation has not improved over time, as per the authors’ findings.

Sutton explained that the persistent low state of marine life is due to the absence of dense patches of prey required by predators, leading to a decline in deep-diving whales, dolphins, fishes, shrimps, and squids.

The study suggests that the Deepwater Horizon disaster is the primary cause of this decline, as remnants of the spilled oil are still being detected in their ongoing sampling. The presence of harmful components like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the oil is a significant concern, as these compounds have been found in the muscle tissue and eggs of deep-sea fishes and squid, potentially impacting their health and reproduction.

Experts not involved in the study noted that the research accounted for natural factors affecting fish abundance, such as temperature, food availability, and oxygen levels. They emphasized that the prolonged gushing of oil into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days was likely the primary cause of the observed decline in marine life.

Furthermore, the negative effects on species have broader implications for the entire Gulf ecosystem and its crucial role in carbon sequestration in the deep ocean. The deep pelagic zone, where researchers conducted their surveys, encompasses a wide range of depths from around 200 meters to 1,500 meters beneath the surface, supporting diverse marine life like lanternfish, stingrays, sperm whales, and krill.

These species play a vital role as a “biological pump” for carbon, aiding in the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The study highlights the potential weakening of this essential ecosystem service due to pollution, hindering the ocean’s ability to absorb excess greenhouse gases.

As discussions continue regarding increased offshore oil drilling activities, experts warn of the risks associated with potential oil spills and their lasting impacts on marine environments. Despite promises of ocean protections, concerns persist about the environmental consequences of oil transportation and potential accidents in sensitive marine regions.
