Italians were surprised by the dismissal of a US principal who showed students a picture of Michelangelo’s David, labeled as “pornography” by parents. Hope Carrasquilla, the principal of Tallahassee Classical School in Florida, was fired due to complaints from three parents about an art lesson content. The lesson on Renaissance art, which included “David,” “Creation of Adam,” and “Birth of Venus,” all depicting nude figures, led to her ultimatum of resignation or termination by the school board chair, Barney Bishop.
The decision sparked confusion and anger among locals in Italy, where Michelangelo’s David and other esteemed Renaissance artworks are housed. Dario Nardella, the Mayor of Florence, where the iconic statue is located, criticized the incident as “ridiculous” on Twitter, emphasizing the importance of art education and respect for educators.
Additionally, a social media user highlighted the ignorance towards art, stating that “Art has no greater enemy than the ignorant.” The decision to fire the principal was also ridiculed by various individuals, including a satirical cartoon on the front page of the Italian publication Corriere della Sera.
In response to an invitation to Florence, Carrasquilla expressed her honor and interest in visiting Italy to receive recognition from the mayor. Cecilie Hollberg, director of the Galleria dell’Accademia, where David is displayed, expressed disbelief at the controversy, emphasizing the cultural and artistic significance of the sculpture.
Following the incident, the school board introduced a new policy requiring parental notification two weeks prior to any potentially contentious curriculum. Some parents voiced frustration over the lack of communication and teacher turnover at the school. Barney Bishop, the school board chairman, defended the decision to dismiss Carrasquilla, citing parental rights to be informed about controversial topics in education.
