Dear Coleen
Several months back, I was unfaithful to my boyfriend who lives far away. I engaged in a kiss and spent the night next to another guy at a club, but there was no sexual activity involved.
In a state of panic, I confessed my actions to my boyfriend a couple of days later, and he ended our relationship.
I am still unsure why I disclosed this incident since it was relatively minor. I am deeply in love with my ex and regret the impulsive kiss, which I attribute to feelings of loneliness and missing him while he is away at university. I have made a significant mistake.
Since June, I have not seen him, and he is unresponsive to my attempts to communicate. He will not return home until October.
I am struggling to come to terms with my actions and wish I could turn back time to rectify everything. Despite reassurances from friends that I will move on, I am still deeply attached to him.
I remain as devoted to him as ever and am eager to reconcile, but I fear that I may have irreversibly damaged our relationship.
Convinced that he is my soulmate, I am at a loss on how to move forward if our relationship has truly reached its conclusion.
Coleen’s Response
To begin with, be kinder to yourself. You are young, and while your actions were regrettable, they were not unforgivable. You were honest with your ex, choosing truth over deceit.
Perhaps this incident highlights underlying issues in your long-distance relationship. Maintaining a relationship from afar is challenging, especially at your age when social circles and activities play a significant role. Long-distance commitments demand substantial effort, possibly more than is feasible at your current stage of life.
Consider reaching out to him when he returns and gauge your feelings, but understand that sustaining an exclusive relationship while separated by distance can be burdensome.
Should the relationship be definitively over, rest assured that, as someone who has experienced heartbreak, you will eventually heal and move forward.
