The final moments of a hiker who tragically fell to his death after encountering a bear in a forest have been captured in a chilling video. Christos Stavrianidis, 61, was exploring the Fratko forest in northern Greece with a friend when a large brown bear approached them. Despite his desperate calls for help and attempts to fend off the bear, Christos ultimately plummeted 2,600 feet off a cliff.

The pair, seasoned hikers, had ventured into the forest to visit the wreckage of a 70-year-old Greek warplane before the fatal encounter. Dimitris, Christos’ companion, shared how they were enjoying their day trip until they came face to face with the bear. In a swift and unexpected attack, the bear closed in on Christos, leading to a frantic struggle as the dog accompanying them barked loudly in an attempt to deter the bear.

Dimitris described the bear as massive and male, highlighting the ferocity of the encounter. Despite Christos’ efforts to defend himself with bear spray, the bear’s speed and strength were overwhelming. The tragic incident unfolded rapidly, leading to Christos’ fatal fall and leaving Dimitris in shock with no recollection of the bear’s departure.

According to a spokesperson from the Greek wildlife organization Arcturos, the bear’s behavior was defensive rather than aggressive, indicating it perceived the hikers as a threat. Christos Stavrianidis passed away on June 8, with a forensic report confirming his instantaneous death from the fall. His funeral took place four days after the tragic incident.
