“UK Braces for Snowstorm: 25 Inches of Snow Forecast”

Published on

The United Kingdom is preparing for harsh weather conditions as recent forecasts show blizzards extending as far south as London and Birmingham, with one area expected to receive up to 25 inches of snow.

The imminent snowy weather, set to arrive soon, will cover one region with 65cm (25 inches) of snow today. Data from WXCharts, based on MetDesk information, indicates that temperatures will drop to a frigid -11C in parts of Scotland as a cold snap sweeps through the country.

Simultaneously, the Met Office has issued multiple yellow warnings for ice and snow impacting various regions. Monday saw four yellow alerts in place, with an additional five yellow weather warnings announced for today by the Met Office.

The National Weather Agency cautions that the snow and icy conditions could cause travel disruptions and potential power outages in some areas due to severe weather. WXCHARTS maps show that regions including Inverness, Dundee, Aberdeen, and Glasgow will witness heavy snow on Tuesday, with the Northern Highlands and the Isle of Skye expected to be buried under 65cm of snow.

By 6am on Tuesday, snowfall is projected to reach parts of England, encompassing London, Birmingham, Manchester, Stoke on Trent, and Newcastle, according to weather maps. The forecast indicates that by Tuesday evening, even areas such as Southampton, Bristol, Plymouth, and Cornwall will be covered in snow.

The Met Office forecast for Tuesday (January 6) anticipates wintry showers in parts of Wales and southwest England at the start of the day. As the day progresses, a mix of rain, sleet, and snow is expected to move southeast across Scotland and Northern Ireland before reaching Wales and England later.

Furthermore, the Met Office warns of potential disruptive snowfall affecting central and northern Scotland from late Tuesday morning to early evening. Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert stated that the UK will face various winter weather hazards throughout the week, with low temperatures, snow showers, and ice posing risks. The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings that are likely to be updated during the week.

Looking ahead, the Met Office forecasts a cold period with frontal systems moving in from the west, bringing rain, sleet, and snow across the country at intervals, accompanied by strong winds.

In the extended forecast for Saturday through Monday, January 19, the Met Office predicts a changeable period with occasional Atlantic frontal systems affecting the UK, leading to rain, possibly preceded by snow in some areas, particularly in the north and east. Significant snowfall may occur, especially on northern hills, with potential strong winds and wintry showers along northerly coasts. After a cold start, temperatures are expected to trend closer to average, reducing the frequency of wintry hazards slightly. Nonetheless, there is a suggestion that it may briefly turn colder and drier again towards the end of this period.
