The leader of the Labour Party has issued a warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the UK’s surveillance of Russian activities in British waters following the sighting of a suspicious vessel in the English Channel.

Anna Turley emphasized that Keir Starmer, the Labour Party chair, is actively collaborating with international partners to address such concerns. A tanker named Tavian was observed heading towards Finland, passing north of Guernsey, and is believed to be linked to Putin’s covert fleet, potentially involved in circumventing restrictions on Russian oil trade.

Turley commended Starmer’s efforts on the global stage, highlighting the government’s commitment to monitoring and upholding international maritime laws to ensure the safety of citizens amidst Russia’s actions in the region.

Recent cooperation between the UK and the US resulted in the interception of a Russian-flagged tanker in the North Atlantic, identified as part of Russia’s clandestine fleet supporting military activities in Ukraine. Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander stressed the importance of international collaboration, with RAF surveillance aircraft and the RFA Tideforce assisting in the operation.

The seized vessel, previously known as Bella 1 and associated with Venezuela, was intercepted in waters between Iceland and Scotland. US military authorities acknowledged the UK’s support in social media posts following the successful operation.

Alexander emphasized the UK’s commitment to combating illicit activities funding Russia’s military actions and expressed the necessity of working with allies to counter Russian sanctions evasion efforts.

Efforts to disrupt the financial backing of Putin’s military operations continue, with UK authorities actively seeking to curtail channels enabling such support.
