A tragic incident occurred as a man lost his life following the rescue of two crew members who fell overboard from a fishing boat. The distress call was made on Sunday from a vessel located 14 miles off the coast of Newbiggin in Northumberland, prompting a large-scale emergency response operation.

The UK-registered boat Fortitude issued the emergency call just before 4.20 pm, leading to the mobilization of the RNLI, Coastguard, North East Ambulance Service, Great North Air Ambulance Service, and Northumbria Police. Despite efforts to save the individuals, one person was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital for further treatment, while sadly, another man perished, with his family notified of the tragic event.

Authorities confirmed that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death, and Northumbria Police are collaborating with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch in their investigation. Rescuers faced challenging conditions, including 4-meter-high waves, to reach the distressed individuals in the water.

A representative from Tynemouth RNLI stated that both All-Weather lifeboat and RNLI – Amble Lifeboat Station responded to the call about two individuals overboard from a fishing vessel 14 miles offshore. After a five-hour operation in rough seas, the lifeboat returned to the station by 10:30 pm. The Coastguard also shared that a coordinated response involving multiple agencies was initiated immediately upon receiving the distress call.

Additionally, the North East Ambulance Service deployed resources to the scene, including ambulances, vehicles from the Hazardous Area Response Team, and a medical car from the Great North Air Ambulance Service. One individual was transported to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital for further medical attention.
